Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is one of the most contagious animal diseases and considered of high importance for monitoring and control due to its capacity to rapidly spread across borders affecting large numbers of livestock. The recent detections of FMD virus serotype SAT1 in Bahrain, Iraq and Kuwait have raised significant concerns for the Near East and Western Eurasia regions. Given the SAT1 serotype is not usually present in these regions, it makes the livestock population highly susceptible to the disease.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is hosting a webinar to give an update on the current situation in the Near East and provide recommendations for FMD prevention, preparedness, and response, including the role of biosecurity and vaccination. The webinar will feature experts from the World Reference Laboratory for FMD, the Iraqi veterinary services, the European Commission for the Control of FMD (EuFMD) and FAO.
