FAO publishes a collection of legal briefs on the eradication of hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean

26/03/2025

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has released a new publication titled Collection of legal briefs to eradicate hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean: a tool for Parliamentarians. A collection of ten legal briefs, developed by FAO between 2020 and 2022, analyse key legal frameworks in countries to support the progressive realization of the right to adequate food and contribute to achieving Zero Hunger (SDG 2) in the region.

The collection addresses a broad range of legal and policy issues related to food security and nutrition, including the constitutional recognition of the right to adequate food, framework laws, school food and nutrition legislation, governance of land tenure, responsible investment in agriculture, the rights of rural women, and laws aimed at reducing food loss and waste. It also provides guidance on what legal measures can be taken to protect traditional knowledge and plant genetic resources, to support climate change adaptation in agriculture and family farming, and how to regulate food labelling and consumer protection.

This publication was developed under the leadership of the FAO Development Law Service (LEGN) and the Support to the Hunger-Free Latin America and the Caribbean Initiative project, jointly promoted by the FAO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID).

By providing concrete legal tools for decision-makers, the publication seeks to strengthen governance and enhance policy coherence in the fight against hunger and malnutrition. FAO encourages parliamentarians and policymakers across Latin America and the Caribbean to make use of these instruments to develop stronger and more effective legislation that guarantees the right to adequate food and ensures food security and nutrition for all.
